Junya Watanabe is a Japanese brand born in 1992. At first it has only a men’s collection but in 1993 he presented his first Women’s fashion show.
Watanabe’s creations are characterized by an anti-fashion aesthetic, which is poised between an extreme simplicity and a brilliant complexity. His technique consists in experimentation, deconstruction of dress that become sculptures, thanks to the breakdowns of clothing codes. The forms are geometric, and the materials are synthetic and innovative. Watanabe works with those clothes that he calls “dumbs” trench, coats, t-shirts, that allow him to transform what is ordinary in extraordinary. His clothes are complexed, complicated to create and, sometimes, complicated to wear, intrigant and pioneering.
His style is immediately recognizable, is defined cyber-punk because he recycles industrial materials, and his clothes forms evoke a literary post-modern atmosphere. Watanabe’s woman is a resolute warrior, but her clothes show her sensual silhouette. Military uniforms inspire him for the man's collection, he creates a new hybrid masculinity, thanks to high quality materials, a maniacal attention for details and technologically advanced process.
