American Apparel was founded in 1989 by the canadian Dov Charney.
In 1997, the company moved from South Carolina to Los Angeles, where it continued to grow with the wholesale trade, the sale of t-shirts and fashion brands. After its experience as a wholesale brand, the company moved into the retail market.

The company's retail expansion was the fastest in American history and in 2003 American Apparel opened in Los Angeles, Montreal and New York.
Since 2008, the company has more than 200 stores worldwide and continues its retail growth with new stores in the United States, Israel, Italy, Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Switzerland, China, Germany, Austria, Canada, France, Sweden, Spain, Mexico, United Kingdom, Ireland and Brazil.
